Worshiped in Ancient Egypt for eating refuse and thereby preventing disease, the Australian Ibis has come a long way since then. In fact, they were so beloved for their ability to eat garbage in Ancient Egypt that they were often mummified with a lavish funeral fit for a God. Fast forward five thousand years and the Ibises we Sydneysiders know today aren’t so beloved by everyone. And as much as some Sydneysiders will tell you otherwise, the Australian White Ibis is in fact a native Australian bird, although it has quite the tale of being identified as such. But that’s for another time. For now, let’s try to think fondly of Ibises like the Egyptians did because trust us, you’ll miss them if they’re gone one day.
