Original Painting for Bird Week Exhibition — 20% of the sale of this artwork goes to BirdLife Australia.

This artwork is part of the Bird Week Exhibition, an annual art exhibition supporting BirdLife Australia. The theme this year ‘From the Ground Up’ explores the crucial connection between birds and trees.

We know a fraction about fungi what we know about birds. While much is unknown about fungi, what is known is astounding. Fungi exist in harmony with birds and trees, with mycelium (filaments of fungi) under the soil at tree roots helping the tree with nutrient uptake. Without fungi, trees wouldn’t survive. Fungi help trees at all stages of their lifecycle, from growth to decomposition. Ornithomycology is the study of the relationship between birds and fungi. Much is left to be discovered in this field, but here in Australia we know that Brush Turkeys and Cassowaries help disperse spores through ground they kick up. It has also been observed that some birds eat fungi, including the Eastern Yellow Robin which has been seen exhibiting this behaviour. Much might be unknown, but one thing is certain – we can expect more exciting relationships to be discovered in the field of ornithomycology in time.
